出租 eSIM 安全嗎?- Is Rental eSIM Safe?
#1

App

During my recent international trips, I came across many so-called “rental eSIM” services. They claim to offer easy setup with just a QR code and are often cheaper than regular eSIMs. But after using them a few times, I started to notice some red flags. Here’s what I found — hope this helps others avoid trouble.

? 1. Why Do They Ask for My IMEI?

Many rental eSIM providers ask for your phone’s IMEI to “confirm device compatibility.” Sounds reasonable, right?

But IMEI is your phone’s unique identity. If it falls into the wrong hands, someone could report your device as stolen or use it for tracking or data collection. In some cases, it may even be sold to advertisers or data brokers.

✅ Tip: If you must provide something, just give the first 8 digits (TAC code). That’s usually enough to check device support.

? 2. Shared Connections = Shared Risk

These rental eSIMs are often recycled and used by many people. That means your internet traffic might go through the same IP address as a previous user.

If someone before you used that IP for shady things, you might get blocked by websites, face login issues, or be flagged by Google, etc. It happened to me — Gmail kept forcing security checks because of suspicious activity from the shared IP.

✅ Tip: Avoid logging into personal or sensitive accounts when using a rental eSIM.

? 3. "Just Data" Still Has Risks

Even if the eSIM doesn’t offer calls or SMS, there are still risks:

- Shared or flagged IP addresses
- Tracking by advertisers using your data footprint
- Some providers ask you to install apps with excessive permissions
- Your device info and usage may be logged without you knowing

? So, Can I Still Use Rental eSIMs?

Yes — but only for low-risk tasks like:

- Using Google Maps
- Searching for food or transit
- Checking weather or translation apps

Just don’t use it for logging into emails, banks, or anything sensitive.

I personally switched to known providers like Airalo, Ubigi, or 3HK. They cost a bit more, but they’re transparent and don’t ask for sensitive info.

✅ Summary Tips:

- Use rental eSIMs only if necessary, and only for basic browsing
- Never give out your full IMEI unless absolutely needed
- Don’t install unknown apps from shady providers
- Stick to trusted platforms for peace of mind

Let me know if you’ve had similar experiences, or if you’ve found a safe provider. Hope this helps!
