Domestic airlines have their own standards for checked baggage, which are clear when you buy a ticket: how many bags you can check on a given ticket, and how many kilos each bag can weigh. If you are a Gold/Silver member of the airline, there is a free baggage allowance for different membership levels, such as 10kg. This is not a problem for domestic one-way flights, nor for domestic connecting flights. International one-way flights are not a problem, but international one-way flights are. And this problem is not found on the internet.
Why is there a 'trap'? On the same airline, an international round-trip ticket consists of a domestic and an international segment. If the free baggage allowance for Gold/Silver members is 10kg, but the shape of that 10kg is completely different.
In the domestic sector, the increased free baggage allowance of 10kg for Gold/Silver cardholders can be combined with the original free baggage allowance, e.g. your original free baggage allowance is 1 piece/20kg and with the addition of this 10kg, your free baggage allowance becomes 1 piece/30kg.
In the international section, the increased 10kg free baggage allowance for Gold/Silver members remains unchanged, but it cannot be combined with the original free checked baggage in one suitcase, you must add a new suitcase / bag. In other words, you have to add a new suitcase / bag for the additional 10kg free checked baggage allowance.
Doesn't that sound like they don't want you to check in? If travellers don't know this, when they check in for the second leg of their international journey, the ground staff will ask them to repack their bags on the spot, separating 10kg from their original bags and repacking them. It is a very embarrassing scene.
Is there anyone who will tell you that the baggage on a joint international ticket goes straight through and there is no need to check in again? This is highly unlikely. The final check-in for international flights departing from China must be re-checked to match the border/customs control that applies to departing flights.
The best way to avoid the embarrassment of having to repack your baggage is to pack the additional 10-30kg of free baggage that Gold/Silver members are entitled to on the domestic leg of the flight separately to avoid the hassle of having to check-in for international flights. In particular, if you only increase the free baggage allowance by 10kg, people tend to ignore the check-in requirements for the later segments and put everything in the same suitcase.
Now you can understand how people are always forced to unpack and repack their luggage at international check-in, right? What's more, some people are forced to unpack their luggage in plastic bags and rush to board the plane with a big bag of stuff.
