The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967. In addition, three other buildings have been designated as individual New York City landmarks: the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory (designated in 1973); the LuEsther T. Mertz Library (2009); and the Lorillard Snuff Mill (1966, also listed separately on the National Register of Historic Places).
The New York Botanical Garden was established on 250 acres in 1891. It is one of the most important botanical gardens in the United States.
The Botanical Garden features a diverse landscape that includes 50 gardens and plant collections, 50 acres of pristine forest, and a Victorian-style greenhouse with a dense rainforest.
Beginning in April 2025, the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) will be open to the public free of charge every Wednesday morning. Non-New Yorkers (without a New York City ID) who wish to visit for free must enter the garden at 10:00 am on Wednesdays. Also, free admission does not include a ride on the NYBG trolley, as the trolley must check the ticket.
For example, all orchid displays on the mainland have orchids transplanted from the wild into pots for you to view. The New York Botanical Garden's (NYBG) orchid exhibition displays orchids in their original wild environment, which is built by hand in a greenhouse.
